Mindfulness meditation is the practice of dissolving all the thoughts and worries of past and future to live in the present moment. Because of its simplicity and accessibility, I used it as my starting point. Initially, I would find a quiet spot at home and focus on my breath for at least ten minutes.

But gradually, I started setting more time for it. As a result, I started being more aware and appreciative of my surroundings and also became better at managing my negative emotions, such as anxiety, sadness, and anger.

Loving-Kindness Meditation (Metta)

Loving-kindness meditation, or Metta, involves developing feelings of unconditional love and kindness for yourself and others. This practice starts with silently repeating phrases of good wishes and love—such as “May I be healthy,” “May I be happy,” and “May I be fulfilled”—first to yourself and then to others.

As I practiced Metta, my relationships with others improved, my stress and anxiety levels reduced, I became more emotionally resilient, and my empathy towards myself and others increased.

Body Scan Meditation

Body scan meditation is the practice of mentally scanning the body from head to toe and feeling the sensations without trying to change them. I would lie down, eyes closed in a quiet place, starting with my toes and moving up my body. This practice helped me identify parts of my body where I stored tension, and with practice, I learned to relax these areas consciously. This practice enhanced my mind-body connection, reduced stress and anxiety, and helped me sleep better.

Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a type of meditation practice that allows one to access the deeper parts of the brain without having to concentrate. It involves repeating a specific mantra for 20 minutes twice daily to calm and settle the mind.

This practice benefitted me in numerous ways. My mental clarity and focus enhanced, my emotional stability increased, and I became more creative.

Zen Meditation (Zazen)

Zen meditation, or Zazen, is a sitting meditation in which one brings one’s entire being—free from mental chatter and dualistic thinking—to the present moment. This practice is central to Zen Buddhism, where one aspires to attain the state of mushin (no mind).

As I meditated for extended periods, I became able to embrace impermanence and non-attachment. Additionally, I developed a deeper insight into the nature of existence and self, and my mental clutter and noise reduced significantly.

Guided Visualization

Guided visualization is a mindfulness exercise in which one mentally pictures positive, peaceful, or goal-oriented images under the guidance of a narrator or teacher. This exercise aims to improve one’s relaxation, stress-freeness, and overall well-being.

I began my journey by listening to recordings of calming music, nature sounds, or a soothing voice guiding me through the process. I would engage all five senses to become a part of the world the sound created. As a result, I found an escape from stress and anxiety. I became more optimistic and resilient, enhancing my mental focus and clarity.

Chakra meditation is shifting our focus to the seven main chakras, or energy centers, along the spine. The goal is to restore the chakras to their fully functioning state.

As I began this journey, I saw a notable increase in my emotional balance; I became more energetic and vibrant, my intuitiveness and mental clarity enhanced, and my spiritual connection and sense of purpose deepened.

Walking Meditation

Walking meditation involves taking a slow and mindful walk through a serene setting. During the walk, you pay close attention to how your body moves and feels and the surrounding environment. You can do it at home or outside and will enjoy the added benefits of being physically active.

I experienced benefits such as greater awareness of my body, breath, and surroundings. Furthermore, I became more focused and stress-free, developed a deeper spiritual connection, and attained better emotional balance.

Vipassana Meditation, or insight meditation, focuses entirely on the present moment. In it, you observe the changing nature of sensations, thoughts, and emotions without attachment or aversion. It stems from ancient Buddhist tradition and is a profound method of self-exploration and mindfulness.

As I started practicing it, I developed a deeper understanding of the nature of reality, became better equipped to tackle life’s challenges, and cultivated greater mindfulness. It also helped me with self-discovery and spiritual growth.

Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep, is a meditation technique in which you drift between sleep and wakefulness. It is a powerful way of relaxing and releasing tension by lying down. Additionally, this technique incorporates other meditation exercises, which further adds to its effectiveness.

Among other benefits, yoga nidra improved my sleep quality, attained calmness and resilience, developed a positive mindset, and became deeply connected to my physical and mental states. In addition, it is effective for managing chronic pain by reducing the perception of pain.
