What I Wish I Knew Before Downloading the 1st Phorm App

I struggle with strength training, but I know it’s good for me and it’s something that can help my running.

For the past few months, I’ve been looking for a strength training program that I could use around my running schedule but kept falling short.

Most of the strength training programs I found or bought seemed decent at first, but I quickly would realize they’d call for more days than I could fit in strength training, or they weren’t diastasis recti safe and didn’t offer modifications.

One of my runner friends started posting her strength workouts online, and after seeing them a few times I become interested. They were straightforward, efficient, and moves that I was familiar with and approved to do by my PT! I reached out to her about her program and that’s when she told me it was all through the 1st Phorm App.

I quickly downloaded it and that night was paired with a coach and set up with a program!

I’ve now been using the app for a few months and wanted to share with you my experience so far and a full review of the app!

What is 1st Phorm?

I thought I had never heard of 1st Phorm before, but before I downloaded the app I searched around and learned that the CEO of the company is the one who came up with the 75 Day Hard Challenge. I was a little nervous after learning that because the 75 Day Hard challenge was always so intimidating to me, but my friend reassured me that you didn’t have to do that when you signed up for the app.

My Review and Experience

I decided to give the app a try and downloaded it. Once I installed it, I was brought to a screen to enter my current stats and goals. I entered all my info, and then I got to a payment screen.

The app is $12.99 a month, which was a lot cheaper than other apps and programs I’ve bought in the past.

Once I paid, I was paired with a coach and started playing around with the app. Inside the app there are a few sections:

  • Dashboard
  • Activity
  • Nutrition
  • Chat
  • and Menu

The Dashboard is a home screen that has things like daily tasks – which include tracking macros, sleeping 7+ hours a night, hitting your protein goal, taking daily supplements, and workout. There are other tasks you can add in there, too, like 30 min walks, reading 10 pages of a book, and more.

Underneath the daily tasks are weekly tasks, which include taking progress photos, entering in your weekly assessment, weighing in, and adding in body metrics.

Underneath that section, is a highlight of your daily macros, step count, live stream videos, daily motivation, and more.

Activity

The next section of the app was the activity section. This was the area I was most excited about because this was where the workout programs were! I was really impressed when I opened it just how many options there were!

They had all different levels of workout programs, from beginner to advance, to home gym to full professional gym.

It was a little overwhelming to pick one, so I decided to wait until I heard from my assigned coach. Within an hour or so of signing up, I got a custom video from her in my chat and a whole log of questions she wanted me to answer before getting started.

I have to say, I was already pretty impressed.

Signing up with a coach

I wrote back my coach, Jodi with my goals and what I was looking for. I also mentioned that I’m postpartum and that I might have to have surgery for my diastasis recti in a few months, so need to be mindful of that. I mentioned that I was planning to not do the nutrition part of the app and was really only interested in doing the strength program since I had recommitted back to WW again.

Within a few hours, Jodi sent back another video and message addressing everything. It was also a huge relief that she had actually gone through the same thing I was going through with diastasis recti, and even had the same surgery I might end up having to get! It was so nice to be able to chat with a coach who completely understood what I was going through.

After a little more back and forth in the app, we decided on a 3 day a week strength training program that I could do at the gym. I signed up for the program in the activity tab and I was ready to go!

Activity

I started the 9 week strength training program a few days after and have been loving it so far. The program has been something I’ve been able to do without modifications, and I can already see a difference in my running.

I also love that the strength program I’m doing is progressive, so each week the reps increase or I do an extra set. The app keeps track of the weights and reps I do so each week I can easily increase the weight.

inside the workout

There have been a few times that the app had me do new to me machines and moves, but it’s been really easy to keep up because each move has a video that demonstrates how to do it. There’s also been times where the gym has been super busy and I wasn’t able to do machines, so I was able to swap out the gym equipment move with a non-machine modification that’s listed in the app.

example of how to do the workout

Since starting the 1st Phorm strength program strength day has become one of my favorite days. I used to dread doing strength, but now I feel very confident and strong in the gym, and it’s been really fun to see how I’m progressing each week (both in the weights I use and in my running pace!)

Nutrition

I initially said I didn’t want to do the nutrition program with 1st Phorm, but after a few pretty bad weeks on WW, I decided to give it a try – after all, it’s all included in the monthly fee anyway. Jodi had already set me up with macros so I started tracking inside the app, which was a lot easier than a lot of other macro apps I’ve used in the past.

nutrition tracking in the app

The app has a barcode scanner, recipe builder, and search bar so I’ve been able to find pretty much everything I eat easily. There have been times where there have been some foods I haven’t been able to find, but it was easy enough to add it myself.

Pros of the App

Here are a few of the pros I’ve found of the app:

Price

I still can’t get over the features you get in the app for only $12.99. I’ve tried so many apps in the past, and for custom coaching like with Stronger U, I was paying over $150 a month.

I’ve found my 1st Phorm coach is extremely responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful, and I’ve gotten better advice and support from her than I have from my more expensive coaches.

Besides the nutrition coaching, the workout programs are also quality workouts. There’s something for every level of exerciser, and the app makes it easy to find a program that’s right for you (as well as having a coach to guide you!). It’s also nice to have access to videos of each move so I can make sure I’m doing them correctly.

Actually Holds me Accountable

I’m a huge fan of the accountability piece. Each week I get to check in with my coach and go over my macros, workouts, and overall progress. I’ve never done progress photos before, but this app actually encourages me to do them (and makes it really easy to do them myself).

Having this kind of accountability has been a game changer for me and my motivation to stick to the plan. I also really enjoy the daily livestreams and find that they give me extra motivation each day to stick with my plan.

Enjoyable Programs

I absolutely love the strength training program that my coach recommended for me. It’s been the perfect addition to my running, and leaves me feeling like I got a really great full body workout, but also able to do my long run the next day.

Amazing Community

Community is another big feature of the app. Since downloading it, I’ve started following some other 1st Phorm members and participating in the Facebook group. There’s a perfect mix of support and motivation, and it’s been really helpful seeing what they do to stay on track. Everyone has also been really welcoming and supportive of everyone’s goals! It really begins to start to feel like a family in the community, and I love it.

Adjustable Workout Program

One thing I’ve really appreciated with the app is that I can modify the workouts. Sometimes at my gym the equipment’s being used and I’m in a rush, or my gym doesn’t have certain machines.

For each workout in the app, there’s an option to see alternative moves (and this usually also includes body weight movements). I can click on the alternative move and swap it into the workout in place of the other one!

Cons of the App

While I’ve really enjoyed the app, there have been a few downsides to it. Here’s some of the cons:

Macro Tracker a Little Tough to Navigate

While macro tracking itself in the app is easy to do, I had a little trouble at first navigating where the recipe builder was. My coach had to teach me where to find it – it’s in the 3 dots of the maco coaching section. I wish that part was a little easier to find, as well as the place to edit recipes is in a different section of the app as well.

Steps Aren’t Accurate

The app currently only connects to Apple Health, and for whatever reason I haven’t been able to get my Coros or Garmin smartwatches to connect to it! This isn’t a huge deal since my macros are set each day, but it would be nice to see and be able to participate in the community step challenge.

Is 1st Phorm an MLM?

The biggest thing I was concerned about when signing up with the 1st Phorm app was that this was going to be some kind of MLM or pyramid scheme. $12 a month for everything inside the app seemed way too good to be true, especially when I compare to the macro coaching apps I had used in the past (like Stronger U which was $150 a month!).

I had tried searching on Reddit for reviews on 1st Phorm and if it was an MLM, and everything came back as no. While 1st Phorm does have an ambassador type program, called the Legionnaires, they make money on commissions but it’s not an MLM or pyramid scheme. Besides the $12.99 a month for access to the app there are no other commitments or costs.

Since signing up for the app, I haven’t been pressured into buying anything additional – and actually, it’s been the opposite. I had been browsing the website and was considering trying a supplement to help lose weight faster. When I brought this up to my coach, she actually discouraged it and gave me some tough love about how inconsistent my macro tracking was and that before I try any supplements I needed to get my nutrition down. Dang!

I do thank her for that advice because since I’ve started tracking and upping my protein I’ve started to see my body composition change.

Is the App Worth It?

Overall I find the app to be completely worth it and honestly am still in shock it’s only $12.99 a month, without any commitments. From the custom nutrition coaching I get to the workouts and community support, the app has been by far one of the best investments I’ve made.

Final Thoughts

Overall I’m really impressed with 1st Phorm and the app. The quality of the nutrition coaching, workouts, videos and community is top-notch for a very reasonable price.

If you’re looking for high-quality personalized nutrition and workout guidance with a supportive community, 1st Phorm is definitely worth checking out. The app has made it much easier to keep up with my goals and stay motivated.
