Built Bars: Best Protein Bar or Overhyped Candy Bar?

Protein bars are a great way to make sure you’re getting enough protein, but a lot of them are unhealthy and full of sugar.

It can be tough to find a good protein bar that’s not loaded with sugar or other unhealthy ingredients. It seems like once I find a protein bar that meets all my nutritional needs, it doesn’t taste that great.

I saw a lot of fitness enthusiasts on Instagram talking about Built Bars and how delicious they were so I decided to try them out!

In this post, I’ll share with you my experience with Built Protein bars and if they live up to the hype as a protein bar or if they’re just nothing more than a fancy candy bar.

What are Built Bars?

Built Bars are a low calorie, high protein snack bar that’s become really popular over the last few years. They’re available in 9 different flavors and have at least 17g of protein and only 130 calories per bar!

Built started out with protein bars and have quickly expanded to also offer:

BuiltGo

Built Boost

Built Bites

Built Broth

Built Stix

Built Puffs

Built Bars are the most popular product they offer and I think most of this popularity is because not only are they healthy and delicious, but they are also really low in Weight Watcher points.

What’s inside a Built Bar?

A Built Bar has 17-19g of protein (depending on the flavor), 6g fiber, only 130 calories and they taste great! They use whey protein isolate as their main source of protein to make it a high quality bar.

I ordered an 18 count mixed box of Built Bars and got sent 2 of the following:

Coconut

Coconut Almond

Cookies N Cream

Salted Caramel

Raspberry

Double Chocolate

Peanut Butter Brownie

Cherry Barcia

Mint Brownie

The first one I had to try was Coconut Almond – I love love love Almond Joys, and this bar reminded me of it. One bite in and I thought I was actually eating an Almond Joy.

My Review

The texture of the bars is more chewy than a usual protein bar and reminded me of a marshmallow texture. There was a slight crunch from the nuts in the Coconut Almond one, but not too much.

In the non-nut version there wasn’t any crunch at all.

I was really impressed with the flavor of the bars – they didn’t taste fake or like a health food at all. They really tasted like a candy bar, and (best of all) they were protein packed.

This wasn’t like any other protein bar I’ve tried in the past. This was by far the best tasting protein bar I’ve ever had!

For the most part, I loved all the flavors I got in the mixed box. The only flavor I didn’t really care for was the Raspberry bar because I kept getting a weird aftertaste so I’ll probably not order that one again.

The nice thing is that Built has a feature that you can create your own mixed bar set so you can pick the flavors you like – and skip the ones you don’t!

I also liked that after having a Built Bar I felt satisfied.

Sometimes protein bars can still leave me hungry or craving something more, but that wasn’t the case at all with these bars! I’ve found that if I have one of these after my lunch it helps keep me full all afternoon long.

Built Bars vs. Built Bites vs. Built Stix

Over the past few months Built Bar has been coming out with a few different versions of the Built Bar, including Bites and Stix.

I’ve accidentally ordered both of these so I thought I’d share what the difference is between all these.

Essentially, they’re all the same. The biggest difference between Built Bars, Stix and Bites are size, shape and sometimes flavors.

Built Stix are long, stick shaped bars that have the same texture as regular Built Bars.

I ordered the Candy Cane version during the holidays and while it tasted good, I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a crunchy stick or anything in the middle. The texture was identical to a regular Built protein bar.

They were lower calorie (and lower protein) than regular Built Bars so keep an eye on that before you order.

Built Bites are the same as Built Bars, just miniature. Similar to Stix there are certain flavors that are only available in Stix – like Rocky Road.

They’re also lower in calories – I believe about 80, depending on the flavor, and have lower protein content so again be mindful when you order.

Are Built Bars Worth the Money?

Built Bars might seem like they’re a little pricey, but when you compare them to other protein bars they’re reasonably priced (about $2.15 a bar). For the taste and quality, I do think they’re completely worth the price.

Built Bar Nutrition and Calories

Generally, all Built Bars have the same nutritional information:

130 calories

2.5g Fat

18g Carbs

6g Fiber

17g Protein

The exception are the bars with nuts, like the Coconut Almond. Those ones have slightly higher macros:

180 calories

7g Fat

19g Carbs

7g Fiber

18g Protein

Where to Buy Built Bars

Ready to try Built Bars?

Currently, Built Bars are available directly on their website, Walmart, and Amazon.

Built vs Quest Bars

Built and Quest Bars have very similar nutrition labels, but the tastes are completely different.

Quest Bars are more like a traditional protein bar, and in my opinion tend to have a weird protein aftertaste. There are hacks you can find online to make them taste better, but shouldn’t bars taste good right out of the box?

I prefer Built over Quest Bars because not only do they taste a lot better, but I also like the texture of Built more. Quest bars are very tough to chew and the flavors don’t taste the best.

Conclusion

Built Bars are a great protein-filled snack option that taste good and leave you feeling full. Plus, they’re very reasonably priced for the quality of them!

If you’re looking for a new guilt-free snack that tastes like a protein packed candy bar, I highly recommend checking out Built Bars! They’ve quickly become my favorite protein bar!

  1. Missing from the nutrition information is the amount of sugar. Very concerning. Even if there very little it still should be stated.

    1. it depends on the flavor, but it’s usually about 4g per bar. The nutrition label will have the exact amount depending on which flavor you get! Hope this helps 🙂
