Best apples for apple crisp
When making apple crisp, the type of apple you choose can make a big difference in the texture and flavor of your dessert.
While many apples can work, here are some of the best choices:
Granny Smith
These are tangy and hold their shape well during baking. They provide a nice contrast to the sweet crumble topping.
Honeycrisp
As the name suggests, they’re sweet with a hint of honey flavor and have a juicy, crisp texture.
Braeburn
These have a balanced flavor of sweet and tart and bake up perfectly in crisps.
Golden Delicious
Mildly sweet, they’re soft and blend well with other apple varieties.
Jonagold
A cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious, they bring the best of both worlds – sweet with a touch of tartness.
Cortland
These don’t brown as quickly, and they have a tender, sweet-tart flesh that’s perfect for baking.
Pink Lady
Crisp and slightly tart with a sweet undertone, these apples add a vibrant touch to your dessert.
Fuji
They bring a super sweet flavor, which can often reduce the amount of added sugar needed in your crisp.
McIntosh
Soft and juicy, these apples break down easily when baked, offering a smooth texture to your dish.
For the best results, you can mix and match a few varieties. This will give your apple crisp a depth of flavor and a perfect blend of textures.
How to cut apples for Apple Crisp
Remember those times in Grandma’s kitchen, where the aroma of baked apples would fill the air?
A big part of that magic lay in how the apples were prepared.
Cutting apples the right way can elevate your apple crisp from good to extraordinary. Here’s how to get it just right:
Choose Your Tools: A sharp paring knife or an apple corer will be your best friends for this task.
The Peel: While some prefer leaving the skin on for added texture and flavor, most classic apple crisp recipes call for peeled apples.
The Cut: Slice your apple in half from top to bottom. Lay each half flat and make angled cuts around the core to remove it.
From here, slice the apple halves into even, thin wedges or semi-thin slices. Not too thick, not too thin—just right for soft, tender bites with a slight bite.
Final Touch: Toss those apple slices in a bit of lemon juice. It prevents browning and adds a subtle zesty kick to balance the sweetness.
With your apples prepped and perfect, you’re on your way to creating an apple crisp that would make Grandma proud.

Easy Cinnamon Apple Crisp
Ingredients
- 6 large apples cored, peeled, and sliced
- 1 T fresh lemon juice
- 1/3 c. real maple syrup
- 2 T 100% apple juice sugar free
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground allspice
- 1½ tsp fresh thyme leaves
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 c. old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/3 c. almond flour
- 1/3 c. almonds sliced
- 1/3 c. honey
- 3 T unsalted butter melted
- To Serve: Optional Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce
Instructions
- Move your oven's top rack to the middle position and set the temperature to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8” x 8” baking dish and keep it ready.
- In a large bowl, mix the apples with lemon juice. Add in the maple syrup, apple juice, cinnamon, allspice, thyme leaves, and a pinch of salt. Give everything a good stir and let it sit.
- In a different bowl, mix all the topping ingredients together, ensuring the oats are well-coated.
- Pour your apple mix into the baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Layer the topping over the apples, making sure it's spread uniformly.
- Pop the dish into your heated oven for about 30 minutes. If you notice the topping getting too brown, loosely cover it with some aluminum foil. Keep baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until you see a bubbly apple crisp.
- Once done, take it out and let it cool for a short 5-10 minutes.
- For the perfect finish, serve it warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top. Dig in and enjoy!
