Pinterest used to be my best friend. I loved the days of scrolling through and pinning new recipes to try for dinner.
Unfortunately, most of that stopped when I had kids. While I love cooking, most of the dishes I would find on Pinterest would take way too much time to cook or call for so many different ingredients that it would get too expensive.
The other night I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and came across a new spice brand that promised to take any dish to the next level with their premium spice blends. The brand was called Just Spices, and they've just launched in the U.S.
The spice blends - especially the Avocado topping - had me really intrigued. I decided to order the starter box, and in this blog post, I'll share with you my experience and if they're worth ordering.
What are Just Spices
So what exactly is Just Spices and what makes their spices unique?
They're a premium spice company that is very popular in Europe and is now expanding to the U.S. They provide high-quality spice blends for every type of dish - from chicken to avocado toast. They even have a casserole topper (or, as we call it here in the Midwest, Hot Dish).
Each of the spice toppers are blends of different types of spices. This really appeals to me because instead of having to buy a ton of different herbs, it was all conveniently mixed together.
The Taste Test
So how do the spices actually taste?
The first one I tried was the Avocado Topping. I'm a creature of habit and tend to stick to avocado toast every day, so I knew I had to try this one first.
I made my avocado toast the usual way (a little avocado mash with cherry tomatoes, topped with an egg) and sprinkled the topper on top.
The Avocado Topping is made up of Sea Salt Flakes, Tomato flakes, Black Sesame, and Tellichery Pepper. The first thing I noticed when I opened it was the huge sea salt flakes. I sprinkled a bit on my toast and could not believe how flavorful the toast became.
The difference was instant and striking.
The Sea Salt Flakes gave that wonderful crisp crunch with every bite, which contrasted beautifully with the creaminess of the avocado mash. The Tomato flakes added a slight tanginess, providing a depth to the toast I never knew I was missing.
The Black Sesame imparted a subtle nuttiness, and its dark specks made my toast look gourmet. And the Tellichery Pepper!
It was like the grand finale in every mouthful - a warm, slightly citrusy kick that lingered just the right amount.
Honestly, I had always thought my avocado toast was top-tier, but this blend? It transformed my usual breakfast into something that tasted like it came straight out of a chic café's kitchen.
It's hard to describe, but the balance was just perfect. Every component of the Avocado Topping complemented the others without overshadowing them.
I'm not usually one to gush over spices, but this blend really did it for me. It wasn't just about the added flavor; it was the experience, the journey of tastes in every bite.
The Chicken Allrounder was quite a surprise. When I first looked at it, I thought, "This seems pretty standard." But then, the mix of ingredients, especially with both Pink Crystal Salt and Smoked Sea Salt, got me curious.
I decided to try it out on a simple chicken breast. Using the sous vide method meant I was really counting on the spices to pull through, as there wasn't going to be any char or grill to add extra flavor.
Definitely worth it. The chicken came out juicy, as expected, but the flavor was more layered than I anticipated.
The Paprika and Chilli Peppers gave it a nice hint of heat, while the Turmeric and Cumin added a warm depth. The Thyme and Rosemary brought in a familiar herby note, and the Smoked Sea Salt? A genius touch that gave an illusion of a grilled taste.
It wasn't overpowering, just a solid, well-balanced blend that made my chicken dinner a hit. I can see this becoming a regular in my kitchen, especially on those days when I want good flavor without a fuss.
If you're a fan of no-nonsense, effective spice blends, the Chicken Allrounder is worth checking out.
