Is Chicken Taco Soup good for when you’re sick?
When you’re feeling under the weather, chicken soup is often recommended as a comforting and nourishing meal. But what about chicken taco soup?
Can it also provide some relief when you’re sick? The answer is yes! This hearty and flavorful soup can actually be a good idea for those battling a cold or flu.
The warm broth of the soup can help relieve congestion and soothe a sore throat. Plus, the chicken provides protein and important nutrients to support the immune system.
The combination of spices such as cumin can also help with inflammation and clearing nasal passages.
And let’s not forget the added bonus of vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and onions that provide essential vitamins and antioxidants.
Can you freeze taco soup?
Yes, you can definitely freeze slow cooker chicken taco soup! In fact, it is a great make-ahead meal that can save you time and effort on busy days. Here’s how to properly freeze and store your delicious soup.
First, let the soup cool down completely before transferring it into an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. This will prevent steam from creating ice crystals, which can affect the taste and texture of the soup.
Make sure to leave some room at the top of the container for expansion during freezing.
One of my favorite ways to store leftover soup is to use Souper cubes. These make leftover soup into individual servings so it’s easier to grab a single portion as a freezer meal.
To thaw your frozen chicken taco soup, simply place it in the refrigerator overnight or use the defrost setting on your microwave. Once fully thawed, you can reheat it on the stove or in the microwave for a quick and easy meal.

One important thing to note is that the vegetables in taco soup may become slightly softer after freezing. However, this should not affect the overall flavor and nutritional value of the soup.
Remember to label your frozen soup with the date and contents, so you can keep track of how long it has been stored.
Generally, chicken taco soup can be kept in the freezer for up to 3-4 months.
What are some toppings you can add to this soup?
Toppings for chicken taco soup can add an extra layer of flavor and texture to this delicious meal. Here are some popular options to consider:
Shredded cheese: This classic topping adds a creamy, cheesy element to the soup. Cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack, or a blend of Mexican cheeses work well with the flavors in taco soup.
Sour cream: Similar to cheese, a dollop of sour cream on top of the soup can add a tangy and creamy element. To make it even more rich, you could add in a little cream cheese
Avocado: Sliced or diced avocado is a popular topping for Mexican-inspired dishes. It adds a smooth and buttery texture to the soup.
Cilantro: For those who enjoy this herb, adding some fresh cilantro on top can enhance the fresh and herby flavors in the soup.
Tortilla strips: These crunchy strips, often made from corn tortillas, can add a fun and crispy element to the soup. They are also commonly used as a topping for Mexican soups and salads.Crispy tortilla strips are an easy way to add texture to this amazing soup
Jalapenos: If you like some heat in your taco soup, sliced or diced jalapenos can provide that spicy kick. Just be careful not to add too much if you’re sensitive to spicy food.
Lime: Squeezing some fresh lime juice on top of the soup can add a refreshing and citrusy flavor. It’s a great way to balance out the richness of the soup.
Lettuce: Add some fresh chopped lettuce to the top to give it a little crunch!
Feel free to mix and match these toppings or come up with your own combination based on your preferences.
Whether you’re in the mood for a creamy and cheesy soup, or something with a bit of a kick, these toppings can make your chicken taco soup even more delicious.
How is Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Soup Different Than Chicken Tortilla soup?
Slow cooker chicken taco soup and chicken tortilla soup are both popular Mexican-inspired dishes that feature similar ingredients such as chicken, tomatoes, and spices.
However, there are a few key differences between these two soups.
One major difference is the method of cooking. As the name suggests, slow cooker chicken taco soup is made in a slow cooker or crockpot. This allows for the flavors to develop and the chicken to become tender without much effort from the cook.
On the other hand, chicken tortilla soup is typically made on the stove top on low heat, requiring more hands-on cooking time. There are also popular versions of chicken tortilla soup that can be made in the instant pot.
Another difference is the addition of beans. While both soups can include beans like black beans, chili beans and pinto beans, slow cooker chicken taco soup often has a larger amount of beans compared to chicken tortilla soup.
This gives the slow cooker version a heartier and more filling quality.
Slow cooker chicken taco soup is often topped with crunchy tortilla strips or chips, while chicken tortilla soup may be served with toppings such as avocado, cheese, and cilantro. These toppings add different textures and flavors to each soup.
In terms of flavor, both soups have a similar base of tomatoes, onions, and spices. However, slow cooker chicken taco soup usually has a deeper flavor due to the longer cooking process. The chicken also adds more richness to the broth compared to chicken tortilla soup.
Overall, while both soups share many similarities, they each have their own unique qualities that make them stand out.
Whether you prefer the ease of a slow cooker or the depth of flavor from stovetop cooking, both chicken taco soup and chicken tortilla soup are delicious and comforting options for any meal.
