Easy Smash Burger Taco Recipe
My juicy taco meal is seasoned with just salt and pepper but you can definitely add your own taco seasoning to the mix. I like to keep it simple, especially since the homemade taco sauce has so much flavor. You really don’t need much more flavor than that!
Making Smash Burger tacos is also a lot easier than making regular tacos. The tortilla and the ground beef are actually cooked together which fuses the tasty meat to the flour tortilla. Not only does this make cooking tacos at home really easy, but it also prevents the filling from falling out of the soft tacos as you eat. Problem solved!
I know that you will love Smash Burger tacos but you should also try my Instant Pot Vegan Tacos and my Taco cupcakes. There are just so many great ways to add excitement to your taco night recipes!
Ingredients For Smash Burger Tacos
Smash Burger tacos are made with some pretty simple ingredients. You probably have a lot of these ingredients in your pantry already! Mayonnaise, mustard, relish…we all have that stuff! If you happen to be out, check out these Amazon affiliate links for my favorite ingredients for making Smash Burger tacos.
When buying your ground beef, try to grab beef that is labeled as 80/20. This means that the meat has 80% lean meat and 20% fat. You can choose a leaner meat (like a 90/10 ground beef) but the tacos are really tasty with a little extra fat! Don’t worry, though! You can just hop on that Peloton later and work it all off! The flavor is worth it.
Once you have your ingredients on hand and ready to go, it’s time for the best part- cooking and eating! Heat up that skillet and get ready to make the best taco recipe ever.
How to Make Smash Burger Tacos
To start making Smash Burger tacos at home, mix up the ground beef with the seasonings.
Then, divide the meat into 8 balls. Lay the 8 flour tortillas on a flat work surface and press one of the meatballs onto each tortilla. Make the meat nice and flat, covering the whole tortilla. It will look like a burger on top of a tortilla!
Cook the tortillas one at a time, placing each one into a hot skillet, meat side down. The meat will take about 2 minutes over medium high heat to cook and start to turn golden brown. Flip the tortilla so the meat side is up and sprinkle with the shredded mozzarella cheese. Cover and cook until the cheese is completely melted then remove the smash burger from the pan.
To make the sauce, just mix all of the sauce ingredients together in a small both. Easy as that! Drizzle the sauce over the top of the melted cheese, then add some shredded iceberg lettuce and onions on top of the sauce.
Fold the tortilla in half, enclosing the meat, cheese, sauce, lettuce, and onions. Then, eat! You won’t be able to resist taking that first bite.
A pro tip that I want to share is to make a little extra sauce. I like to actually double the sauce recipe because more sauce is always a good idea. Plus, you can save the sauce and use it on almost anything. Smash burger sauce on nachos, sandwiches, and even over eggs can be quite tasty!
Can you believe how easy it is to make Smash Burger tacos at home? I just love cooking the ground beef right onto the tortilla. It is such a great way to make soft tacos and cook the ground beef for tacos perfectly.

- Large skillet
- Spatula
Ingredients
For The Smash Burgers
- 1 pound ground beef
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 8 small flour tortillas
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- cooking oil for frying
For the Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup dill pickle relish
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp paprika powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
For Toppings
- 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce,
- 1/2 cup chopped onions
Instructions
- Make the Smash Burgers: Start by seasoning the ground beef with salt and pepper. Then, divide it into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls.
- Take each meatball and press it down onto a tortilla, using your fingers to flatten it out.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add a small amount of cooking oil to prevent sticking.
- Place a tortilla in the skillet with the meat side down. Use a spatula or another flat tool to press the beef down, creating a thin patty that covers most of the tortilla's surface.
- Cook the burger on one side for about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes until the beef begins to brown. If desired, use the back of the spatula to press down on the burger to flatten it further.
- Flip the tortilla and burger over and immediately sprinkle a portion of shredded mozzarella cheese over the cooking beef patty.
- Cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt and continue cooking for another 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, or until the burger is cooked to your desired level of doneness.
- Remove the smash burger from the skillet and set it aside. Repeat this process with the remaining smash burger tacos.
- Prepare the Sauce: In a small mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, Dijon mustard, white vinegar, paprika powder, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix well until all the ingredients are fully blended. Set the sauce aside.
- Assemble the Smash Burger Tacos: Sprinkle the chopped onions over the shredded iceberg lettuce.
- Drizzle the prepared sauce over the toppings. Adjust the sauce amount according to your taste
- To assemble each taco, place a generous amount of shredded iceberg lettuce with onions on top of the burger.
- Fold the tortilla in half, creating a taco shape.
- Serve the smash burger tacos immediately and enjoy the delicious fusion of smash burgers and tacos!
