Why I’m Doing Stronger U While Pregnant (and so excited!)

Usually, when you hear about calorie counting or macro counting, it’s assumed to lose weight but that’s not the case at all! When I was pregnant with my first baby I found that counting macros helped me have a healthy pregnancy as it made sure I had a balanced diet.

This time around I enlisted the help of a coach from Stronger U. I had been hearing so many great things in the Peloton community and on Reddit about Stronger U and decided to jump in. I’m a few days in and am already so glad I did!

What is Stronger U?

Stronger U is nutrition coaching service that pairs you with a Nutritionist or Registered Dietician that provides macro coaching. Your coach provides you with customized macros as well as answers any questions you have. Each week you have an official check in with your coach to review progress.

When you sign up for Stronger U you have a few options for membership, with the shortest being a 3 month membership all the way to an annual membership. I signed up for the 3 month membership for now to try it out, but can already see myself continuing this after the baby’s born.

What is Macro Counting?

Before I get too far I should explain what exactly macro counting is. Macro counting is similar to calorie counting, except you could your macronutrients (aka macros) – this is what makes up the calorie count. Macros are made up of:

  • Protein (1g = 4 calories)
  • Carbs (1g = 4 calories)
  • Fat (1g = 9 calories)

Instead of having a calorie goal each day, you have a goal for each of the macros. My goal based on my activity level and current weight is 180g Carbs, 65g Fat, 125g Protein.

My First Impression of Stronger U

I’m a few days in and am already obsessed with Stronger U (I totally understand the cult following now). Within a few hours of signing up and entering in my goals, I was paired with my Registered Dietician coach, Josette and given a set of macros to try out for the week.

Josette also sent me a personalized welcome video, a little introduction, and walked me through my macros. She also explained to me that my official start would be a week later so I had time to try out my macros, give feedback and play around with Stronger U’s web based app, DNA.

Stronger U’s platform, DNA integrates right with MFP so it’s been super easy to track my food and sync so my coach can see them. I also like that I can message Josette any questions (or really anything!) and she gets back to me really quickly. She also has a lot in common with me so it feels more like I’m chatting with a friend instead of just “another online coach”.

In addition to the app, Stronger U also has an extremely welcoming and active private facebook group. I’ve been a member for a few days and already feel like I’m a part of the community.

My Goals with Stronger U

My ultimate goal with Stronger U is to have the healthiest pregnancy possible for me and my baby. I tend to gravitate to carbs (give me alll the ice cream and S’Mores Goldfish!!) and not get in enough protein so macro counting helps me make sure I get in a more balanced diet.

I also want to learn how to make this lifestyle sustainable when the new baby comes so I don’t feel overwhelmed. It’s amazing how much things changed when I had my first baby, I can only image what life’s going to be like with a toddler and newborn!

I’m really excited to be on this journey and I’m planning to share my experiences over the next few weeks!
